In the late 1980's I remember watching the construction of the Rio Mall in Atlanta. It was located at the corner of North Ave and Piedmont Ave (535 Piedmont Avenue NE, the current site of a Publix and Walgreens). It was a quirky mall painted in baby blue and other primary colors that was open air, featured a huge geodesic dome and a central pond with hundreds of golden frog statues and some sort of experimental "video wall" that quickly fell into disrepair. The mall never really seemed to take off. Atlanta was a very different place in the 1980's and it wasn't "cool" to be moving back into the city. I thought the place was ahead of its time. Anyway, I went looking for info on the mall and I found that there just isn't too much out there. I did snag a photo from the AIA Guide to the Architecture of Atlanta:

Apparently the company that did the architectural design for the mall was Arquitectonica. They went on to do a lot of really neat international projects (http://www.arquitectonica.com). I seem to recall going to the LA Fitness at the Rio Mall as late as 1999. Sembler bought the mall out of forclosure and demolished it soon thereafter. Now that corner looks just like any other Publix/Walgreens combo. Typical Atlanta :)
